Southwell City St Mary’s

Manager: Phil Sargison

History

Founded in 1896, Southwell St Mary’s FC began as a church team managed by local clergy. While details of the club’s early years remain scarce, its post-World War II history is better documented.

Post-War Challenges and Name Change

Following World War II, the club faced financial difficulties. In need of a new kit but lacking funds, the team proposed a raffle to raise money. When church authorities opposed this ‘gambling’, the club stood firm. Consequently, in 1950/51, the name changed to Southwell Amateurs FC, affectionately known as ‘The Ammos’.

A Rival Emerges

Around 1955, a splinter group formed a rival club, reviving the name Southwell City FC.

League Affiliations

The Ammos joined the Newark & District League, remaining until its dissolution in the early 1970s. They then spent about a decade in the Nottingham & Districts League before its merger with the Nottingham Spartan League. In 1996, following another league dissolution, the club joined the Midland Amateur Alliance.

Era of Success

Under the leadership of Doug Crawley, and later manager Dave Scott, the Ammos flourished. The club’s trophy cabinet grew significantly, with a remarkable five trophies claimed in the 2009/10 season alone. Shortly after the club reverted back to its original name of Southwell St Mary’s.

Recent Developments and Future Outlook

In 2013, Southwell St Mary’s merged with Southwell City due to financial problems and a lack of players. Shortly after that, St Mary’s ceased to exist as a separate team. However, in 2024, the club made the decision to revive the St Mary’s name within the Southwell City organisation. This revival, occurring 128 years after the original St Mary’s team was established, sees the newly formed Southwell City St Mary’s set to compete in the Nottinghamshire Senior League.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, there’s a sense of optimism about the future. This new chapter not only honours the club’s rich heritage but also demonstrates the enduring spirit of St Mary’s. With over a century of history behind it, the club takes pride in its legacy while embracing the challenges and opportunities of modern football. Southwell City St Mary’s stands ready to build on its deep roots in the community and create new memories in the seasons to come.
