Pre-Season for the mens first team begins with a trip to Clifton on August 8th. We then travel to Teversal and Newark Town before finishing off with fixtures at Collingham and Holbrook St Michaels. Some testing early fixtures for Jonny Upton’s team which should be a great help in shaping our squad for the upcoming season.

City U14’s Looking For New Players
Southwell City Saracens are on the look out for new players to join them. The team play on Saturdays and next season will be U14’s in YEL Division 2. The coaching team are now looking to add a few players to the squad in time for the next campaign.

Chairman’s Update
Firstly, I hope everybody is keeping well and staying safe at this difficult time. As the lockdown gradually eases, we can only wish that we soon return to a more normal existence and the chance to do things like play football!
Like many local organisations and businesses, the football club has been very much affected by the pandemic. With no income coming into the club, we are fortunate that we do have back up funds to keep us going. So, we wait and hope that we are in a position to play football again in the Autumn and we can start the slow return back to normal.
Brinkley Update
The lockdown has meant that we have had to postpone much of the development at Brinkley for a season. However, this week we were granted planning permission by Newark & Sherwood Council, which means that we can now plan ahead and start to deliver what we have promised, albeit a bit later than planned!
The club is truly grateful for the time and effort given by Joseph Kemish Architects. Joe has been a true friend to the club. His images of the proposed clubhouse and main pitch can be seen below.
Memorial Ground
Away from Brinkley, we also hope to make some improvements at the Memorial Ground, which we would like to have in place before the beginning of the next football season, whenever that starts. As well as spending some money on essential maintenance of the main pitch, we will be upgrading the windows and doors as part of a process of smartening the place up. We want to encourage people to start using the facilities more, for both football and community-related activities.
Presentation Day
Under normal circumstances, last weekend would have been our Junior Presentation Day. Despite the event being cancelled, some teams will still be issuing the usual end-of-season medals and trophies and managers will be in touch about this. As a club, we hope that we might be able to arrange a day in September when we can all come together and celebrate a return to football. Obviously, we cannot be certain that this will happen, in current circumstances, but we would like to do something. Hopefully we are not being too optimistic!
NHS Appeal
Thank you to everybody who donated to our recent appeal for Nottingham NHS hospitals. In just one weekend, club members and friends donated nearly £2,500, which is amazing! As a club, we will continue to look at ways in which we can positively contribute to our local community, for the benefit of all.
Senior Teams
Finally, I am pleased to report that our adult first teams have both had a great season, despite the early end to games. We are lucky to have two inspirational first team managers in Jonny Upton (Mens) and Andy Mollet (Ladies). Their end of season messages can be found on the club website:

Manager’s Update – City Ladies
First and foremost, myself and Mike trust that all our players and their families are well during these challenging times. The Notts Girls and Ladies League have rightly made the season null and void but we can look back at the 14 games played with immense satisfaction.
The ladies finished 6th in 2018-19 in our first season in senior football and reached the semi finals of the cup but we always knew that we would lose 8 of that team to university at the end of the season. We were very fortunate that Ted Miller’s title winning Under 16’s merged into the first team squad ahead of this season and have been immense for the team as we reached 3rd place in the table in October and sat 8th at the point of lockdown with a cup.semi final place also achieved.
During the season we recruited 2 players with 8 years worth of senior league experience between them and even as the season came to it’s abrupt close, 1 more player with such experience agreed to join us. We are set to lose 4 or 5 more players ahead of the new university term in the autumn but we are busy recruiting players who not only have the football ability but who have the right personalities to compliment the fantastic team ethos we have within the team

Manager’s Update – First Team
Firstly, I hope all our players, managers and family associated with the club are keeping healthy as we all get used to football taking a back seat. From a 1st team perspective, clearly we’re all operating in unprecedented circumstances. The league has been “null & voided” with us in 2nd place. Whilst officially the results won’t stand, we’ll keep records our end so months of hard work isn’t undone.
The season was mixed from my perspective. We started with a huge amount of change from the season before, which we hadn’t planned on. We lost several key players and it’s not easy replacing them with no budget. The NSL is a strong Step-7 league and in my opinion 5/6 teams would cope fine operating in a league above. By the end, performances had started to dip and we dropped points unnecessarily against teams we should be comfortably beating. Despite us being 2nd, we would’ve been a long-shot to win the league so we have to improve next season (whenever that is).
However I also have to remember where we are and how far we’ve progressed. We’ve kept the core of the team from Southwell with most of which have come through our youth teams. We’ve played some great football at times and feel the connection between the lads and the community is at its best level in years. In the 83 games since I took the job on, we’ve only lost 15 times – & 2 of those were in the cup against Step 6 teams. Thank you for all the support this season, from the chairman and committee to the support we’ve had home and away, it’s hugely appreciated and I hope you can see the progression too!
With next season still up in the air in regards to a start date, it’s difficult to plan & prepare. We know Brinkley is around the corner but we’ll have another season at the Memorial Ground – and we have to do our best to make it a memorable one. The majority of the squad should remain the same, but I know we need a few more bodies to make us more competitive.
Finally, I want to congratulate George Caudwell on his move to America. He’s wanted this for a while and worked his socks off to get there. It’s fully deserved, he’s a great player but also a great lad – I’m sure he’ll smash it over there and look forward to seeing his progression.

Happy Birthday Mitch!
What do you do when it’s your big birthday and it’s in the middle of lockdown? City’s Vice Chairman, Mitch Annable, was not to be deterred from celebrating his big day, just because he couldn’t go out. So, he decided to hold his very own Isolation Cup Final in the back garden, complete with his family in Southwell City kit!
It looks as if it was a lovely day for it and we will update when he let’s us know the final score! 😄
