Southwell City Are League Champions

Southwell City have been crowned 2021-22 Notts Senior League champions after a 4-1 away win at FC Cavaliers. It’s the first league title for the team for 21 years and should enable promotion to Step 6 of the non-league pyramid for the first time in the club’s history.

It’s been an impressive season for the lads, in which they went on an unbeaten run that broke all previous records.

Chairman John Cunningham said, “The first team has been a real credit to the club. They have set out to play entertaining and exciting football, in the right way. The lads can be very proud of themselves. I am certainly proud of them. Huge thanks must go out to Jonny Upton and the rest of his management team for creating a positive environment where this team has been able to truly fulfil its potential”

Juniors and Seniors Together

A record crowd was in attendance at the final home game of the season against AFC Dunkirk. Junior players from the club were mascots for the day and took part in an enjoyable penalty shoot out at half-time.

It’s also been a successful season for City’s junior section. The club is now represented by over 30 teams from Under 6’s through to Under 18’s. Both boys and girls teams are strongly represented at all age groups. The clubhouse at the Memorial Ground is now the junior hub and the club is investing significant time and money into improving the facilities in the building.

One recent improvement has been the opening of a new weekend cafe at the clubhouse that is open to all visitors to the Memorial Ground. Run by Nellie At The Park, the new cafe will serve food and drinks which customers can enjoy sitting both inside and outside. The cafe is set to become a popular attraction for all visitors to the park.

Keeping Football Safe

League Risk Assessments

Managers, players and parents,

Huge thanks for the support in the initial phases of COVID and we have enjoyed the return to football, which has and is continuing.

You will all be aware of the new variant and the increased community infection risks. We have updated our risk assessments, so please take time to read – you can access them through this link. The changes are not significant and as a hospitality venue, clubhouses carry no restrictions but of course people can elect to wear a mask inside if they wish. The changes are highlighted in the risk assessment and we continue very much as we are but perhaps with a little more awareness and caution as the risks are increasing. Keep playing, keep enjoying it, keep safe though.

Any queries – give me a call or drop me a mail. Looking forward we will shortly be checking our coaches record and will send a link on line to fill in – really quick if you know your FAN; we’ve the 1st action plans (laminated format to get to you) and we are planning some defib training – we will keep all posted.

Thanks

Richard Miller
Welfare and COVID Officer

New Sponsor for City’s Youngest Footballers

Southwell City’s youngest football teams, this year’s Under 7’s and Under 8’s, have a new kit sponsor, The Bramley. Starting this season, those teams will be wearing the distinctive red logo on the front of their shirts for the first time. And very smart they will look too!

City Chairman, John Cunningham said: “As a club, we wanted to recognise the important role that The Bramley has in supporting our local community and in promoting local sport. So, we were pleased to come to an agreement to promote the newspaper on the front of our youngest teams’ shirts. The kits look really smart, and I am sure the children will be proud to wear them when they play matches around the county.”

The club used a local supplier, Sportstar of Southwell, to design and manufacture the kit, part of a wider commitment with them to produce teamwear for all City teams.

Any boys and girls that are keen to play football can find information on the club website. As well as teams in most age groups, very young players can also attend City Kickers, which is for the youngest players aged 4-7.

Success for City Girls

Southwell City Under 13 Girls have enjoyed a successful end to a heavily disrupted season. Needing a win in their last league game at home to Arnold to guarantee winning their league, they were ahead 1-0 at half time thanks to a goal direct from a corner from Lucy Carney and a clean sheet from Hope Barnes in goal. The second half saw a completely dominant display by Southwell go unrewarded as Arnold went 2-1 up with two quick-break goals. Then two goals from Seren Elias using her electrifying pace to out-sprint the defence followed by a fingertip save by Lucy Carney in the dying minutes secured the win and the 2nd Division title with an unbeaten record of 8 wins and 2 draws.

Three of the players, Alana Priestley, Lucy Carney & Hope Barnes then capped their fine seasons off by stepping up a year and helping the Under 14 girls to victory in their plate final against West Bridgford with a 4-1 win.

Next season, as well as winning promotion to the 1st Division, the girls will be moving to 11-a-side on full size pitches. Anyone currently in Year 8, no matter what your ability, who would like to give football a try, please contact Chris Barnes on 07870 928233
